Tameo TMK368 Lotus 56B 1/43
Welcome to Part 1 of the build log for the Tameo Kits 1/43 Lotus 56B (TMK368), raced in the 1971 Italian Grand Prix. The Lotus 56B is one of the most distinctive Formula 1 cars in history, powered by a Pratt & Whitney gas turbine engine and feature a striking wedge-shaped body design.
1. Kit Overview & Parts Inspection(キット概要と仮組み)
Before starting the build, here is a breakdown of the model kit specifications and key components:
Manufacturer: Tameo Kits (Italy)
Kit Number: TMK368
Scale: 1/43
Subject: Lotus 56B Pratt & Whitney Turbine – 1971 Italian GP (#00 Emerson Fittipaldi)
Material: White Metal, Photo-Etched Parts, Turned Metal Wheels, Cartograf Decals

2. White Metal Body Preparation (ボディの下地処理)
White metal casting requires careful surface preparation to ensure crisp panel lines and flawless paint adhesion.
Step 1: Removing Mold Lines & Flash (バリ取りとパーティングライン処理)
Using precision needle files and #400–#800 waterproof sandpaper, I carefully removed the mold seams along the nose and engine cover edges. The wedge shape requires strict flat surface alignment, so using a sanding block is essential.

Step 2: Thinning Body Edges for Scale Realism
To achieve true-to-scale realism in 1/43 scale, the thick cast edges of the white metal body must be thinned down significantly. Using a rotary tool (micro grinder) equipped with a diamond bit and tungsten carbide cutter, I carefully shaved down the inside edges of the cockpit surround and rear engine cowl. Thinning these edges down to a razor-sharp profile dramatically enhances the scale precision when viewed from any angle.

3. Photo-Etched Chassis Assembly & Soldering (エッチングシャシーの組み立てとハンダ付け)
1/43 scale metal kits require meticulous chassis alignment. The chassis for this Lotus 56B consists of photo-etched brass/nickel parts that must be folded precisely and soldered together. Any slight misalignment during bending will twist the entire chassis structure, preventing all four wheels from sitting flat on the ground.
Step 1: Precision Folding & CA Glue Mock-up
First, I carefully folded the main chassis structure using a photo-etch bending tool and brass rules. Before committing to soldering, I performed a complete dry fit using CA glue (instant adhesive) to verify that the suspension pick-up points were perfectly square and aligned.

Step 2: Acetone Dissolution & Permanent Soldering (アセトン分解とハンダ本組み)
Once the alignment was fully verified, the temporarily assembled chassis was soaked in acetone to completely dissolve the CA glue. After cleaning the metal surfaces, I applied flux and permanently joined all chassis seams using a high-temperature soldering iron and low-melting-point solder. This process yields a rock-solid, perfectly square chassis foundation.

4. Hybrid Soldering: Joining Photo-Etched Parts to White Metal
The underside of the front nose structure consists of photo-etched metal parts, which must be permanently soldered to the main white metal body casting. Unlike soldering thin photo-etched sheets together, joining etched brass to a heavy white metal body requires precise thermal management—if the temperature gets too high or the iron stays in contact too long, the delicate white metal casting will melt instantly.
Thermal Control & Technique (適切な熱量設定とコテ使いのコツ)
Tip Change & Temperature Setting: I switched to a thicker, higher heat-capacity soldering tip to properly heat the white metal body, setting the soldering iron temperature precisely to 300°C.
Soldering Technique: To prevent the white metal from melting, the iron tip must never press directly against the casting for extended periods. Instead, I carefully brushed the tip along the joint line using quick, sweeping motions, allowing the solder and flux to flow smoothly into the seam by heat conduction.

5. Engine Clearance & Cowl Fitting (エンジンのクリアランス調整とカウルのチリ合わせ)
Since this Tameo TMK368 is a full-detail kit featuring a complete Pratt & Whitney turbine engine, fitting the main body cowl tightly over all internal components without any gaps requires rigorous clearance testing.
If all engine and auxiliary components are installed at once, identifying where the interference occurs becomes nearly impossible. To solve this, I installed components step-by-step, checking body cowl clearance at every stage.
Step 1: Thinning Cowl Walls for Rear Auxiliary Parts
Installing the auxiliary equipment at the rear of the chassis caused severe contact with the cowl interior. To resolve this, I carefully shaved down the inner surfaces of the body shell using carbide rotary burs.

Step 2: Fixing Engine Cover Lift & Air Intake Fitting (エンジンカバーの浮き修正と最終調整)
Fixing the 1mm Gap: The biggest challenge was a 1mm body lift when the engine cover was temporarily mounted. I thinned both the top surface of the engine cover itself and the inner wall of the body shell until the gap was completely eliminated.
Intake Duct Adjustment: The final component installed was the top air intake duct. Through repeated test fitting and sanding, the body cowl thickness at its thinnest section was reduced down to a precise 0.7mm.

6. Custom Scratch-Building & Fine Detailing (細部パーツの自作とディテールアップ)
To push the level of realism even further, I scratch-built several key components using brass wires, nickel silver (German silver) sheets, and stainless tubing, replacing thicker white metal parts or flat photo-etched pieces.
1. Foot Pedal Covers & Steering Wheel (フットペダルカバーとステアリングの精密化)
Foot Pedal Cover Rims: To add 3D depth and thickness to the flat photo-etched foot pedal covers, I soldered 0.3mm nickel silver wire along the outer edges of the rounded rectangular openings, then carefully filed and sanded the surfaces smooth for a refined, solid profile.
Steering Wheel Assembly: Combined a turned brass rim with photo-etched spokes by soldering them together.

2. Brake Discs & Custom Rear Brake Ducts (ブレーキディスクとリアダクトの製作)
3-Layer Brake Discs: Laminated three photo-etched parts together, mounted them onto a rotary tool, and spun them to grind and clean up the outer circumference evenly.
0.1mm Nickel Silver Ducting: The stock rear brake ducts felt too thick for 1/43 scale. I made templates using masking tape, cut four individual panels from 0.1mm nickel silver sheet, and soldered them into a speaker-horn-like structure.
Soldering Jig Hack: To hold the tiny sheet pieces in place during soldering, I used Kokuyo’s “Hittsu-ki Mushi” (tack putty). It is extremely heat-resistant and holds delicate metal parts stable without leaving residue. Clearance with the outer cowl was also verified.

3. Custom Engine Piping with Stainless Tubing
The kit’s engine plumbing was originally supplied as flat photo-etched pieces. To create authentic 3D fluid lines surrounding the turbine engine, I scratch-built new piping using SAKATSU stainless tubing (0.6mm OD / 0.4mm ID).
Cut short stainless tube sleeves and soldered them together two-by-two using soft wire solder inside.
Built two complete piping sets: one for the display engine and one for the chassis-mounted engine.

4. NACA Ducts, Bullet Mirrors & Roll Bar (NACA
NACA Duct Opening: Drilled out the recessed NACA ducts on the cowl and shaped the sharp triangular openings using an Argofile “Dia Finish” diamond file (design-knife shape), which works brilliantly for fine angles. Closed the backing with thin nickel silver sheet.
Bullet Side Mirrors: Scratch-built the bullet-shaped mirrors using brass wire with rounded edges, then polished the mirror surfaces to a high shine with PiKaal metal polish.
Roll Bar Replacement: Replaced the fragile white metal roll bar with 0.8mm brass wire for superior strength and clean geometry.
